Wednesday Night Programs: Volunteers Needed!
Since we currently have only one youth intern, providing a manageable and safe environment on Wednesday nights will require another adult volunteer present between 6 and 7:30 pm. Please help us continue to expand our lively youth ministry. Anyone interested in chaperoning Wednesday nights please contact the Director of Youth Ministries, Randy Winton.
Happening #118: September 17-19 , 2010
What is Happening?
Happening is a program modeled on Cursillo but designed for high school youth. During a two day gathering, participants experience the love of our Lord Jesus Christ as shown through the sacraments and the ministry of fellow students, clergy, and lay adults. Teens are encouraged to take a renewed faith back into their worlds to "make a friend, be a friend, and bring a friend to Christ." Happening is endorsed by the National Youth Ministry Office of the Episcopal Church.
Overview of Happening Weekend
A Happening weekend begins on Friday afternoon with registration, dinner and orientation. That evening the theme of the weekend is developed through a series of keynote addresses presented by both youth on staff and priests for the weekend. Throughout the weekend, Happeners work and play, sing, share, pray and worship. They are introduced to the sacramental life of the Episcopal Church. The weekend ends with Eucharist on Sunday afternoon.
Who Attends?
The staff of a Happening is made up primarily of teenagers who lead the weekend and take care of the Happeners. The adults are logistical support, acting as cook, chaperones, or they may be attending as Happeners themselves. Priests are present on the weekend as Spiritual Directors, giving some of the addresses and serving as chaplains. Happenings usually take place at a church in the diocese that wants to sponsor a weekend. All meals and housing are provided by the host parish.
Any high school student in the 10th through 12th grade may attend Happening. A small number of adults are also allowed to attend as participants in the weekend. Adults who attend must be at least 21 and working in youth ministry.
How do I apply?
If you would like additional information about Happening, you can contact the St. John's Rector, Youth Director, or talk to any one of our teenagers who have been to Happening.
