The St. John’s Choir School is an initiative that grew out of the parish’s strategic plan, but for nearly a decade this program has been a dream of St. John’s Music Ministry. We hope that in the near future, we will be able to expand further into the Tallahassee community so local residents can also reap the many benefits from this opportunity for music education.
The possibility of a choir school at St. John’s is discussed in earnest by St. John’s rector at that time, the Rev. David Killeen, and director of music, Dr. Betsy Calhoun. Research on comparable programs is conducted by the music staff.
Parishioner and former sacred music intern Marissa Hall researches the possibility of charitable gifts to support the initiative and drafts several documents including a proposal, budget, and program design for St. John’s. The project is shared with the St. John’s Executive Committee in late 2017.
The Choir School is proposed as an initiative of a 5-year strategic plan and is accepted. The strategic plan is formally approved by the parish in April 2019. Plan goal champions meet to discuss plans and progress in June.
The Choir School Advisory Board is created and begins to meet virtually during the pandemic. Visio, timeline, and marketing strategies are discussed, and brochures and other informational documents are created. The St. John’s Vestry votes to begin the Choir School in 2023.
Marissa Hall is hired as Assistant Director of Music to oversee the development of the St. John’s Choir School. Programmatic elements of the current chorister program begin to grow to lay the foundation for the Choir School’s launch in fall 2023.
LAUNCH:Coming Soon in August 2023!
We are looking forward to the official launch of the St. John’s Choir School, a three-day-a-week offering of choral rehearsal, music theory, and instrumental lessons, tuition-free. The Choir School, which incorporates the K-2nd grade “Joyful Noisemakers” and the 3rd-12th grade “Choristers,” will provide more opportunities for children to deepen their musical understanding, learn the importance of service to others, and interact in a safe and supportive intergenerational setting.
