Big things are ahead for Sundays at St. John’s! Starting this fall, we’re returning to a three-service Sunday morning schedule to make more room for worship, welcome, and belonging. This change is rooted in joy—because we’re growing—and allows us to offer even more ways for people to encounter the grace of God and the warmth of St. John’s. Below are answers to some common questions about what’s changing, why, and what to expect. Click here to watch Fr. Lonnie’s May 25 sermon where he outlines the changes.
Q: What’s changing about Sundays this fall?
We’re returning to three Sunday morning services starting September 7:
- 7:45 AM
- 9:00 AM
- 11:15 AM
Q: Why is this change happening now?
Because we’re growing! Attendance has steadily increased over the last three years, particularly the past year and a half. Our current two-service schedule can feel crowded, especially at 10:00 AM. This shift is about making room so everyone—newcomers and longtimers alike—can find a spot and truly belong.
Q: Didn’t we used to have three services before?
Yes, before COVID, the church had a rhythm of three services: 8:00, 9:00, and 11:15. We’re essentially returning to that structure, with one small tweak.
Q: What’s different this time?
The early service will start at 7:45 AM instead of 8:00 AM. This gives more transition time between the first and second services, a huge help to the altar guild, clergy, and musicians.
Q: What will each service be like?
Each service will continue to offer a distinct experience:
- 7:45 AM: A quiet, contemplative Rite I service.
- 9:00 AM: Lively and family-friendly with organ, choir, choristers, and Children’s Chapel—very similar to the current 10:00 service.
- 11:15 AM: A more solemn and traditional offering with chant, incense, and choral music.
Q: When will Sunday School happen?
Sunday School for all ages will take place between services from 10:15 to 11:00 AM, fitting neatly between the 9:00 and 11:15 services.
Q: Will this new schedule be year-round?
Not quite. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, we’ll return to a simplified summer schedule by combining the 9:00 and 11:15 services into a single 10:00 AM service, just as we’ve done in the past.
Q: Will there ever be other combined services?
On rare occasion during the program year—such as stewardship Sunday and the Bishop’s visitation—we may hold a combined service to pull the whole parish together. These will be communicated well in advance.
Q: What’s the big picture here?
This isn’t about splitting up the community. It’s about expanding what’s already working, making space for deeper connection and hospitality, and embracing the kind of growth every church hopes for.
