On Saturday, May 20, at 9 AM, St. John’s will proudly join Tallahassee’s downtown churches in the ringing of our tower bells to celebrate Emancipation Day. The City of Tallahassee recognizes May 20, 1865, as the date when the Emancipation Proclamation was read on the steps of the Knott House by General Edward McCook. That’s when the enslaved people in Florida learned they were free — two years after the document was issued by President Abraham Lincoln.
St. John’s is glad to play a role in this special day of remembrance and freedom!
9 AM – church bells from many downtown churches will ring for two minutes.
10 AM – a commemorative service begins in Old City Cemetery on Park Avenue
11:30 AM – a dramatic reading of the Emancipation Proclamation begins at the Knott House Museum.
