Global Philanthropy Leaders for Grownups

September 27, 2022 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

This fall, join St. John’s for a six-week journey with GPL (Global Philanthropy Leaders) as we consider the economic impacts of racism in the US. Registration is required so we can ensure enough space, materials, and dinner!

The registration window for this event has ended.

WHO: Adults (18+). GPL was originally created for high school students. However, there is no age minimum or maximum on learning, so we’re offering this portion of the GPL curriculum as a six-week course for anyone over the age of 18.

WHAT: Topics covered will include the transatlantic slave trade, forced labor, redlining, lack of access in capital markets, segregation in education, racial justice in student debt, and the persistent racial wage and wealth gap.

WHY: We take our baptismal covenant to heart here at St. John’s and with God’s help affirm that we will: resist evil, seek Christ in all persons, love our neighbors as ourselves, strive for justice and peace among all persons, and respect the dignity of every human being. Beyond learning about these tragic injustices in our common history, we will seek to make lasting and positive change by investing in communities historically harmed and marginalized, by making micro-loans through www.kiva.org to Black-owned American businesses.

• Kate Kile, Director of Finance & Stewardship
• JR Saginario, CFP and Wealth Advisor
• Bo Shippen, Adjunct Professor at FSU and Labor Economist

DETAILS: This class will meet on Tuesdays (Sept. 20-Oct. 25) from 5:30-7:30 PM. Your $60 registration fee includes dinner each week (catered by Fran). Please contact Kate Kile with any dietary requirements. Please register by 9/13.
