St. John’s Episcopal Church to Present “Meet Me Here”: A Service of Choral Evensong
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — St. John’s Episcopal Church invites the Tallahassee community to Meet Me Here, a special service of Choral Evensong celebrating the beauty of music, the richness of difference, and the importance of making room for one another.
The service will feature music composed by members of the LGBTQ+ community, including Craig Hella Johnson’s Meet Me Here from Considering Matthew Shepard, Robert Lehman’s O Gracious Light, and Richard Webster’s St. John’s Service. Through music, prayer, and reflection, the service offers an opportunity for people from across the community to gather, listen, worship, and share in the beauty of being together.
Johnson’s Meet Me Here, the first movement of the epilogue to his acclaimed choral work Considering Matthew Shepard, invites listeners toward healing, hope, and connection. The piece asks us to meet one another at the places where our stories may be difficult, and to discover what becomes possible when we move forward together.
“Meet Me Here is really an invitation,” said Marissa Hall, Director of Music at St. John’s Episcopal Church. “It’s an invitation to come together, to listen to beautiful music, to pray, and to remember that we are part of a community. We may come from different places and carry different experiences, but there is room for all of us here.”
The service will follow the liturgy of St. Philip in observance of his feast day and will include a brief homily. St. John’s choir and choristers will lead the music for the full Evensong service, a liturgy which dates back to 1549.
The loose plate offering collected during the service will benefit Equality Florida, a nonprofit advocacy organization working to secure full equality and opportunity for LGBTQ+ Floridians.
“Everyone is welcome,” said Hall. “Whether you come regularly to St. John’s, have never attended a service here, or simply love choral music, we hope you’ll meet us here.”
